Wuhan Meilun P521: Development of a Waterborne Ultra-Thin Screen-Printing Resin for 85% Phosphoric Acid Conditions
Focusing on waterborne film formation, fine-pattern printing, and ultra-thin film protection in high-concentration phosphoric acid environments, this project explores new application boundaries for specialty functional resins.
In certain precision manufacturing processes, screen-printing inks must meet conventional requirements for fine patterns, film formation, and substrate adhesion while also withstanding high-concentration phosphoric acid.
For conventional waterborne resins, balancing formulation stability, bake-film performance, ultra-thin film integrity, and pattern retention under strongly acidic conditions presents a challenging materials-development task.
To address this need, Wuhan Meilun New Materials Co., Ltd. has developed a waterborne screen-printing resin formulation for high-concentration phosphoric acid conditions, resulting in the P521 waterborne ultra-thin screen-printing resin system. Through targeted formulation adjustments and experimental validation, the system has shown potential in waterborne formulation compatibility, film formation, and pattern retention after immersion in concentrated phosphoric acid.
1. Application Challenges: High-Concentration Phosphoric Acid and Ultra-Thin Film Formation
Resin systems used in high-concentration phosphoric acid environments face several challenges.
1.1 Effects of High-Concentration Phosphoric Acid on Waterborne Systems
The introduction of high-concentration phosphoric acid changes the acid-base environment and ionic conditions of a waterborne formulation, placing greater demands on resin dispersion, system stability, and film formation. The resin must be compatible with the formulation and maintain a suitable system condition under actual use conditions.
1.2 High Film-Quality Requirements for Ultra-Thin Layers
When the dry film thickness is controlled at 3–5 μm, film continuity, printed-line integrity, and the control of local defects become especially important. Small particles, pinholes, or adhesion defects may affect subsequent acid-treatment processes.
1.3 Pattern Retention in Acid-Immersion Environments
For fine screen-printed patterns, the ability of a coating to retain its original profile in a strong-acid environment while minimizing dissolution, diffusion, and detachment is an important indicator of material suitability.
Therefore, material development in this area is not simply a matter of pursuing resin-level acid resistance. Formulation stability, printability, bake-film formation, and downstream process conditions must be considered together.
2. Meilun P521: Waterborne Resin Formulation Development for High-Acid Conditions
Wuhan Meilun uses a waterborne acrylic polymer as the basis for formulation adjustments aimed at screen-printing applications in high-concentration phosphoric acid environments.
Unlike resins designed mainly for conventional water resistance, alcohol resistance, or general baking performance, P521 focuses on system stability when high-concentration phosphoric acid is added and on the performance of the cured ultra-thin film in strongly acidic environments.
Development and validation activities to date include:
• Formulation compatibility with high-concentration phosphoric acid: adjustments for the addition of an 85% phosphoric acid solution.
• System stability evaluation: stability testing has been conducted at addition levels of 10%–20% of the 85% phosphoric acid solution; the resin system showed normal behavior.
• Ultra-thin screen-printing film formation: printing and baking experiments targeting a dry film thickness of 3–5 μm.
• Concentrated phosphoric acid immersion validation: room-temperature immersion tests in 85% phosphoric acid to observe printed-line retention and the integrity of the cured film.
Note: The 10%–20% values refer to the addition proportion of the 85% phosphoric acid solution. For production use, the calculation basis and process conditions must be confirmed for the specific formulation.
3. Preliminary Experiments: Performance of 3–5 μm Ultra-Thin Films in Concentrated Phosphoric Acid
In completed experiments, Meilun carried out sequential validation of formulation printing, bake curing, and concentrated phosphoric acid immersion.
Experimental conditions and observations:
• Resin system: Waterborne acrylic-based bake-curable formulation
• Phosphoric acid concentration: 85%
• Formulation addition level: 10%–20% of the 85% phosphoric acid solution evaluated
• Target dry film thickness: 3–5 μm
• Baking conditions: 170°C for 10 minutes
• Acid immersion: 85% phosphoric acid at room temperature, overnight
• Main evaluation criteria: printed-line integrity, film appearance, and pattern retention after acid immersion
In the experiment corresponding to a 10% phosphoric acid solution addition level, the sample was baked at 170°C for 10 minutes and then immersed in 85% phosphoric acid overnight. The printed lines remained clear, and the overall appearance was clean and neat, with no obvious large-scale dissolution, diffusion, or detachment.
This result indicates that, under the specific formulation and process conditions tested, the P521 system provides a basis for further development of waterborne screen-printing materials intended for contact with high-concentration phosphoric acid.
For fine patterns and ultra-thin films, this experiment is meaningful because it evaluates not the conventional acid resistance of thick-film anticorrosion coatings, but pattern retention in a 3–5 μm film after printing and baking of a waterborne formulation.
These are preliminary experimental observations. Immersion duration, film adhesion, degree of cure, and long-term service life require separate evaluation under the relevant application conditions.

6. Wuhan Meilun New Materials: Functional Resin Development for Specialized Conditions
Wuhan Meilun New Materials Co., Ltd. focuses on functional polymer materials and specialty resin formulation development, with R&D and application exploration for electronic materials, UV-curable materials, and specialized process requirements.
The P521 development approach starts from material challenges in specific processes and systematically validates resin and formulation compatibility, printing, film formation, and the final use environment.
For the specialized combination of high-concentration phosphoric acid and ultra-thin screen printing, Meilun considers not only whether the resin can be mixed and form a film, but also whether the cured pattern can remain intact under actual acid-immersion conditions.
Through continued formulation optimization and application validation, we aim to provide more targeted waterborne resin solutions for precision manufacturing processes.
